Clinical Significance
Haptoglobin is an acute phase protein whose primary function is to bind hemoglobin in serum. It acts as the transport molecule for hemoglobin. Haptoglobin plays a major role in preventing the loss of hemoglobin in urine and consequent iron loss from the iron pool. Increased levels of haptoglobin are reported in acute inflammation, col lagenoses, coronary d isorders, Hodgkin’s d isease, nephritic syndrome and tuberculosis. Decreased levels of haptoglobin are found in hemolytic anaemia, liver disease, congenital deficiencies and acute malaria.
Principle
The reagents containing polyclonal goat anti-human haptoglobin when mixed with serum sample containing haptoglobin cause changes in absorbance, due to the development of immune complex, which is d irectly proportional to the concentration of haptoglobin in the sample. This can be interpolated from a calibration curve prepared with different known concentrations of calibrator.
