Clinical Significance
The determination of Kappa light chain in human serum is important for the d iagnosis and sub typing of monoclonal gammopathies. These help in the d ifferentiation of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and multiple myeloma (MM). Polyclonal immunoglobulins exhibit both Kappa and Lambda types of light chains in a roughly constant ratio of 2:1, whereas monoclonal immunoglobulins exhibit only one type of light chain. Increased production of monoclonal immunoglobulins or free monoclonal light chains leads to a Kappa/ Lambda quotient outside the reference range indicating the existence of a monoclonal gammopathy.
